How many miles is too many when buying a used car?
I'm looking at used cars in the $12K range and seeing options from 80,000 to 150,000 miles. I know it depends on brand and maintenance history, but at what odometer reading do things get expensive? I'd like to keep it at least 5 years.

It's less about the absolute number and more about maintenance history. A well-maintained Toyota with 130,000 miles beats a neglected domestic with 70,000. Rule of thumb: under 100,000 miles for Japanese, under 80,000 for European, under 120,000 for domestic trucks. Always read the inspection report regardless.
At 100,000 miles, expect timing belt or chain service, spark plugs, coolant, transmission fluid, and possibly suspension. Budget $1,500-2,500 for deferred maintenance if records don't show it done. Factor that into your bid.
